Three-dimensional unsteady stator-rotor interactions in high-expansion organic Rankine cycle turbines

Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems are a readily available technology to convert thermal energy from renewable- and waste heat sources into electricity. However, their performance is relatively low due the temperature of sources, but more importantly, efficiency employed expander. Designing turboexpander exceptionally challenging, because flow field highly supersonic unsteady, since expansion takes place in non-ideal dense-vapor region. In this work, we perform unprecedented three-dimensional unsteady simulations several high-expansion cantilever ORC turbines highlight distinctive loss mechanisms. The indicate strong effects rotor blade passage, as result propagating shock waves interacting with viscous wakes boundary layers. Moreover, passage strongly affected by secondary features sharp shroud region at inlet blade. These span-wise mechanisms interactions introduce irreversible losses which must be taken account for designing efficient expanders.
